Artemis was the Greek virgin goddess of the moon, the hunt and childbirth. She was the goddess of the woodlands and forests and was able to communicate with animals. She and her twin brother, Apollo, were the children of the god Zeus. Her major temple in antiquity was in Ephesus, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Local tradition maintained that the temple burned down on the night that Alexander the Great was born, because the goddess was away attending the birth.
