The “Owls” as they are known, were the coin manifestation of the power and might of Athens in her glory days. Athena is shown on the obverse, in her aspect as Goddess of Wisdom and Strategic Warfare, with her traditional crested Corinthian-style helmet. The owl on the reverse of the coin is flanked by an olive spring and a crescent moon. The Greek letters Alpha, Theta and Epsilon, standing for Athens, are across the top to make the origin of the coin perfectly clear. The olive leaf sprigs refer to the olive tree that was Athena’s naming gift to the city.

Attica, Athens. 449-413 BC. Silver tetradrachm. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena. Reverse: Owl standing right with head facing, crescent moon and olive sprig behind. To the right, the Greek letters standing for Athens. 22kt yellow gold mounting.
