These Corinthian silver staters were commonly known as colts, for the figure of Pegasus, the winged horse on the obverse. In between Pegasus’ legs, there often is the ancient Greek letter Q (or koppa) which stood for Corinth in its ancient spelling. Pegasus and Athena are commonly associated in the region around Corinth. In myth Athena gave Bellerophon a silver bridle with which to ride Pegasus and Bellerophon later became king of Corinth.
