Michael VII became emperor in 1071 at age 21. In that time his chief pursuit was academia. He retired 7 years later to a monastery and later became archbishop of Ephesus. The coin is made of an alloy of silver and gold called Electrum. Electrum is a natural deposit of gold and silver. The coin is cupped so it can be stacked.
