The name Cherronesos means “peninsula” in ancient Greek and for that reason there are several places that were designated by that name. This coin was minted in a Cherronesos in the ancient area of Thrace, on the modern day peninsula of Gallipoli (Turkey). Coinage with a lion motif was struck there from 480 BC to 350 BC and it was the standard currency for trade between Thrace and the cities of the Black Sea area.

Thrace, Cherronesos. Silver Hemidrachm. 400-350 BC. Obverse: Lion forepart. The lion is looking back over his right shoulder. Reverse: Quadripartite square with bunch of grapes and pellet. 22kt yellow gold mounting.
