The “Owls” as they are known, were the coin manifestation of the power and might of Athens in her glory days. Athena is shown on the obverse, in her aspect as Goddess of Wisdom and Strategic Warfare, with her traditional crested Corinthian-style helmet. The owl on the reverse is holds an olive leaf sprig in his talons. The Greek letters Alpha, Theta and Epsilon, stand for Athens. The olive leaf sprigs refer to the olive tree that was Athena’s naming gift to the city.
