Athena: The Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, craft arts, agricultural arts and reason. Among her gifts to man were the olive tree, the inventions of the plow and the flute and the arts of taming animals, building ships and making shoes.
Gorgon: In the Odyssey, the Gorgon is a monster of the underworld. Later generations feared the Gorgon as a female monster who could turn men to stone if they looked upon her face. Medusa was the most famous of the Gorgons.
Apollo: The Greek god of music, healing, the sun, poetry, and archery. He is the twin brother of Artemis and elder half-brother of Hermes. His attributes include a laurel wreath, bow and quiver, raven, and lyre.
Ares: The Greek god of war, bloodlust, violence, manly courage, and civil order. The son of Zeus and Hera, he was depicted as either a mature, bearded warrior dressed in battle arms, or a nude beardless youth with helm and spear. His attributes are golden armor and a bronze-tipped spear.
Heracles: The semi-divine son of the god Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene, Heracles was celebrated for his immense physical ability. In infancy, he strangled two serpents which were sent to his cradle by the jealous goddess Hera, wife of Zeus. In his adulthood, he was sent to perform 12 impossible tasks of strength to expiate a sin. These are known in the modern world as the Labors of Hercules, Hercules being the Roman name given to this hero. Heracles is most often shown in the nude with his mighty club and a lion-skin.
Janiform Head: The adjective janiform refers to a representation of a head with a face on each side like the Roman god Janus. In the ancient Greek world, having a face on each side would signify omniscience and the ability to see both past and future. In the Roman world, Janus was the god of doors and gates, which can let someone in as well as out.
