Sikyon was the cradle of Western art. The city is credited with originating tragedy in theater, painting in its present form, and the use of multiple instruments in an orchestral arrangement. Sikyon is perhaps best known now for its coinage, the doves that bear the main emblem of the city and lived in the surrounding caves. Sikyon was the most productive Greek city state to produce coins. Their high production continued until the time of the Roman Conquest in 146 BC.
