The coinage of Venice during the early Renaissance followed a fairly typical pattern. The obverse depicts the Doge of the time standing next to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. Each Doge, who was an elected official, ruling only for his lifetime or at the pleasure of the Council, minted his own coinage and was usually depicted this way. St. Mark holds a gonfalon, which is a banner or banners suspended from a crossbar.
